Nope."

A glut of unsold homes is weighing on house prices and frustrating the sector's recovery, even though mortgage rates are near record lows. Home resales have risen for three straight months.

Some officials at the Fed say the central bank should consider further purchase of mortgage-backed securities as a way to help spur a stronger recovery, but no action is expected at the end of the Fed's first policy meeting of 2012 later on Wednesday.

Lenders have adopted stringent requirements for potential homeowners, demanding down payments of as much as 20 percent, and contract cancellations have averaged about a third over the past few months.

But the reports on Wednesday did not change perceptions that a nascent recovery is under way in the housing market, which continues to be challenged by an oversupply of properties.

"I don't think that lower mortgage interest rates are going to help much right now," said Robert Dye, chief economist at Comerica in Dallas. "That's not where the bottleneck is, and that is in two places: credit availability and the processing of paper work."

Applications for home purchase loans declined 5.4 percent last week after two straight weeks of sturdy gains, the Mortgage Bankers Association said in a separate report.

Economists had expected signed contracts for sales, which lead existing home sales by a month or two, to fall by only 1.0 percent. However, sales were up 5.6 percent in the 12 months to December.

"We are encouraged by the pop in prices as it may be a signal of further stabilization in the housing market and evidence that the erosion in home prices may be nearing an end," said Millan Mulraine, senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

(Reporting by Lucia Mutikani; Editing by Leslie Adler)

However, prices were down 1.8 percent in the 12 months to November, indicating the recovery in the housing market would be painfully slow.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Signed contracts for the sale of existing U.S. homes retreated from a 1-1/2-year high in December and demand for home loans fell last week, pointing to a moderation in home sales after recent hefty gains.

<trackback:ping>http://www.radardetectorwholesale.com/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=34&key=bd43d175</trackback:ping>

2 students shot, wounded at Texas middle school

The sheriff said it was too early to say whether the students were targeted or if the shooting was accidental.

Annett said she boarded her bus and it left.

EDINBURG, Texas – Authorities suspect hunters may have shot two South Texas middle school students who were wounded by gunfire Monday afternoon while trying out for a basketball team.

Two boys — ages 13 and 14 — were shot, said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino. Classes were not in session at Harwell Middle School when the shooting happened around 4:45 p.m., but the school complex was immediately placed on lockdown. Edinburg school district spokesman Gilbert Tagle said a number of after-school activities were going on besides the basketball tryouts, including a concert and a faculty meeting. He estimated as many as 200 children could have been on campus.

"They told us to, `Get inside, get inside,'" she said.

Harwell Middle School opened just this year on the rural property northeast of Edinburg, which is about 50 miles northwest of Brownsville. Homes line the road approaching the school, but open fields stretch out behind it and to the north.

She said she heard no shots but saw a group of people on the outdoor court standing near one boy on the ground. A school nurse tended to him while another boy was sitting up.

Annette Vargas Ugalde, a 15-year-old eighth grader, said she was about to board her bus near the gym after school when school officials started rushing students indoors.

The outdoor court where the shooting took place was north of the school complex at an athletic facility that includes a football field, track and tennis courts, said Oziel Garcia, a 14-year-old eighth-grader.

Investigators have spoken with owners of surrounding farms and the land was being leased to deer hunters, Trevino said. Authorities interviewed some hunters who were found on adjoining properties.

Investigators believe the shots may have come from hunters on adjacent farm property, Trevino said. The shots did not come from the campus and were not a result of a drive-by, he said.

Classes will go on as scheduled Tuesday, but with increased security and counselors available to speak with students, said Tagle, the district spokesman.

At the time of the shooting, one of the boys was going for a layup. The other was waiting his turn to try out, Trevino said.

One of the wounded boys was in critical condition Monday night with a bullet embedded in an organ. The other was stable and awaiting X-rays, Trevino said.

Samuel Cepeda, a 15-year-old eighth-grader, said gangs have been a problem at the school, and he has worried about security. However, Trevino said investigators do not believe the shooting was gang related.

<trackback:ping>http://www.radardetectorwholesale.com/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=33&key=de55c173</trackback:ping>

Stay Warm and Cozy Like the Stars -- for $34

This is what I love about accessories -- you can do many things and change your outfit constantly. Fresh off the tenth anniversary party for Ikram Goldman’s Ikram boutique in Chicago this weekend, the designer is in Los Angeles, where she’s doing some celebrating of her own. Tonight, she’ll host a dinner for Paula Hayes, whose glass terraria, ceramic birdhouses, and silicone planters she’s showcasing for the next six weeks in her Melrose Avenue boutique. Hayes’ art will be familiar to anyone who’s visited MoMA since last November. Her installation, Nocturne of the Limax Maximus, was on view in the museum’s lobby until mid-April, and the vivid green plants encased within their handblown glass sculptures provided a striking counterpoint to New York’s long, dreary winter. “Paula is an artist who works with organic shapes and forms in unexpected materials,” Cornejo told Style.com. (She’s also a longtime client; Hayes wears Cornejo’s designs almost exclusively.) “I love the way that her terraria are at once very futuristic-looking, yet still encompass the natural world.” (One of said terraria is above.) The best part of the arrangement? Says Cornejo: “Our ficus tree will get a new home in a silicone planter.”

No rest for the green-thumbed, though. Next week, Cornejo’s back in New York, where on Thursday, she’ll host yet another event—her first ever for her fledgling menswear collection. (She shows a few key men’s looks on the women’s runway.) At Project No. 8 Men’s on the Lower East Side, Cornejo will be on hand to style guys, selling the limited-edition tees she designed with husband Mark Borthwick to benefit Doctors Without Borders, and perhaps most tantalizing of all, offering the collaborative Common Projects x Maria Cornejo sneakers (below) that even her own stores don’t carry.

Maria Cornejo will be at Project No. 8 Men’s (38 Orchard St., NYC) from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 19; to RSVP, email rsvp@projectno8.com.

—Nicole Phelps

<trackback:ping>http://www.radardetectorwholesale.com/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=29&key=41a23400</trackback:ping>

When The Jet Set Goes Off The Beaten Path Gypset

Back in 2009, the globetrotting freelance journalist Julia Chaplin coined the term “gypset”—that being, in her words, “the chic speed of the jet-set mixed with the alternative, anti-commercialism and nomadic wile of a gypsy.” She literally wrote the book on the trend—Gypset Style—and that might’ve been it. But as her journeys found her crisscrossing the globe with a wardrobe that couldn’t keep up, the itinerant traveler decided to translate her “jet-lagged view of the world” into a tightly edited collection of summer-ready dresses, too. “I would go to these far-flung destinations and it came down to the fact that I really had nothing to wear,” Chaplin said of the inspiration for her new endeavor. “You can’t quite wear designer and you don’t want to look awful either, so these designs really suit those needs in between.”

Chaplin debuted the five dress designs, in vibrant prints and fabrics sourced from Africa and Holland, last night at Des Kohan, the off-the-beaten path destination shop that has long been home to some of L.A.’s most sought-after clientele and envious merchandise. With a business built around exclusives (Hussein Chalayan and Viktor & Rolf, among them), the store’s namesake figured it was the perfect opportunity to style Chaplin’s new wares. “I work with all these designers already and figured I wanted to showcase Gypset with the appropriate accessories, so I’ve done these exclusive bags from Bare and have Annie Costello Brown of YSL designing limited-edition jewelry,” Kohan said, as Balenciaga’s Katherine Ross, Mad Men’s Abigail Spencer, and another frequent Des Kohan collaborator, Juan Carlos Obando, browsed. “It’s all just a part of what Julia’s imagined.”

Photo: Alexandra Wyman / WireImage

—Alexis Brunswick

<trackback:ping>http://www.radardetectorwholesale.com/cmd.asp?act=tb&id=28&key=88f6f05a</trackback:ping>

Nicola’s New Project

Photos: Courtesy of Uniqlo

Mugler creative director and Lady Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti has had a big past couple of days.
